Your $150-$750 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines current to the age of the dog/puppy. If you adopt a puppy under six months old, a refundable deposit for a spay/neuter is required. This is to ensure all of our puppies are set up for success in their new homes.
- 02
Unfortunately, we are unable to reserve dogs. Our process operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and we schedule meet and greets with approved applicants accordingly. If you have your heart set on a dog, please complete the application promptly. If there is an adoption event, we suggest arriving early to increase your chances.
- 03
We do not provide discounted adoption rates. As a nonprofit organization, our adoption fees directly support essential expenses such as medical bills, training, food, and the overall care of dogs in need.
- 04
Given the high volume of daily emails we receive, we strive to respond promptly, usually within 1-3 business days. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
- 05
Unfortunately, a significant number of the dogs we rescue come from shelters as strays or with minimal background information after being surrendered by their owners. We make every effort to provide any available history in their profiles. When information is lacking, we prioritize sharing details about their personalities, health, and training, based on their progress within our program.
- 06
Within three days of adoption, we will email our welcome letter, paperwork, verification of contact information, etc. If for some reason you need the paperwork sooner, please email dachshundsandfriendsrescue@gmail.com and we will do our best to accommodate.
- 07
Rules and requirements for adoption can vary depending on your location, and we may not be able to stay updated on all the specific regulations for every area we serve. To ensure accurate information, we recommend reaching out to your local animal services department for confirmation.
- 08
We microchip all the dogs that come into our care. If you adopted your dog from DAFR, then they are most likely microchipped. However, if you're unsure, we recommend taking your dog to the vet to get scanned for a microchip. If you find that your dog is not microchipped, we strongly suggest getting it done as soon as possible. Microchipping is a simple and effective way to ensure your pet can be identified and reunited with you if they ever get lost.
- 09
We may not have immediate information about a dog's housebreaking habits, as shelter conditions often limit our knowledge. Details about a dog's behavior at home typically become clear once they are in a foster or adopter's environment. Adjusting to a new home and routine can sometimes lead to initial accidents, but most dogs adapt within a few days.
- 01
The typical stay can vary based on factors such as age and breed. If you have a time constraint, please inform us well in advance so we can arrange for another foster home to accommodate the pup accordingly.
- 02
We're delighted when our fosters form a special bond with their foster dog. For those interested in adopting their foster, we do ask fosters to complete our online adoption application and follow the formal adoption process.
- 03
At Dachshunds and Friends, we collaborate with you to supply the essentials that will help your foster dog feel at home. The truth is, we can't predict all of a dog's needs since shelter environments don't reveal everything. So, a willingness to embrace a degree of uncertainty is essential before bringing your foster pup home. Rest assured, our team will be there to answer your questions and provide the necessary resources as you navigate this experience.
- 04
Certainly! We welcome fosters with various lifestyles and careers. As long as you're dedicated to ensuring your foster pup receives the necessary exercise, food, and water during the workday, we can accommodate your unique schedule and commitments.
- 05
Absolutely! We will make every effort to pair you with a pup suited for apartment living. It's advisable to review your lease agreements before fostering your first dog to understand any pet policies and confirm if there are any breed restrictions in place.
- 06
Certainly, you can still foster if you have a resident dog, provided your dog is current on vaccines and spayed/neutered. While you won't meet your foster dog in advance, Wags & Walks will make a concerted effort to match you with a foster dog we believe would be compatible with both you and your dog. Our team will guide you through all the essential measures to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone involved.
- 07
By welcoming a dog with special behavioral or medical needs into your home, you are truly changing their lives. These dogs are often overlooked in shelters, and as a rescue, we become their only hope. Fostering special needs dogs is crucial for our mission. The requirements for fostering dogs with extra behavior or medical needs can vary significantly from one dog to another. This may involve working with our trainers to assist your pup with leash training or managing medications and veterinary appointments. Throughout the process, you will receive unwavering support from our dedicated foster team.

However, there are still plenty of ways for younger individuals to get involved and support our rescue efforts. We offer various events and fundraisers throughout the year that can be attended by volunteers of all ages. Additionally, younger individuals can help by spreading awareness about our rescue and sharing our social media posts. Once we have received and reviewed your application, if we determine that your dog is a suitable match for our organization, we will reach out to you to coordinate the dog's transfer.
- 02
We recognize that, despite your best efforts, there may come a time when surrendering your dog is the most compassionate choice. In such situations, we believe that the best solution is for Dachshunds and Friends Rescue to step in, ensuring your dog finds a new and caring home.
- 03
Dachshunds and Friends Rescue does accept dogs surrendered by their owners based on the level of urgency and available foster home space. However, it's important to acknowledge that our resources are limited, necessitating the prioritization of dogs entering our rescue. Our top priority is shelter dogs at risk of euthanasia, followed by dogs requiring immediate healthcare not attainable by their owners. Owner surrenders are considered thereafter. We kindly ask for your patience as we work to ensure the safety and well-being of your dog to the best of our abilities.
- 04
Dachshunds and Friends Rescue understands that surrendering your dog can be an incredibly tough choice, but there are circumstances where it becomes necessary. If you decide to surrender your dog, we will request that you complete a surrender contract. Please be aware that signing this contract constitutes a permanent decision on your part. It legally transfers full ownership of the dog to Dachshunds and Friends Rescue, enabling us to provide the necessary veterinary care and, in the future, find the dog a loving and carefully screened 'forever' home. It's essential to note that we uphold closed adoptions, meaning that we do not disclose the identities of either the surrendering or adopting parties. This policy ensures the protection of your privacy and that of the adopter.
- 05
If your dog isn't a suitable fit for our organization, or if we currently lack the space, we will assist you in finding alternative resources and solutions.
